What is Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy is a fast-acting treatment which can be used in conjunction with other treatments that your pet may be undergoing. Laser therapy has been shown to reduce both inflammation and pain in many parts of the body. If your pet has a chronic condition like arthritis, or has just had surgery, ask our Barrington veterinary team if laser therapy might be helpful for your pet.

How Does Laser Therapy Work?

Therapeutic lasers utilize light energy to promote faster healing in certain areas of the body. These lasers use a single wavelength of concentrated light energy to penetrate the body’s tissues. This application causes changes at the cellular level, giving the cells a nice boost to heal completely.

Laser treatment is not recommended for use on tumors, the uteruses of pregnant animals, testicles, eyes, or on areas that are actively bleeding.

What to Expect During Your Laser Therapy Appointment

When you bring your pet into The Animal Hospital of Barrington, our team of veterinarians will have your pet lie down on the exam table. We use a handheld device to direct the laser to the parts of the body that need the treatment. We welcome you to stay in the room during the procedure – pets often feel calmer when their favorite person is in the room with them! Typically, our Barrington veterinarians will use the laser for three to eight minutes, depending on the part of the body that is being treated.

Everyone including your pet will need to wear special goggles to protect their eyes from the laser while it is being used. Pets and humans alike can suffer eye damage or burns from improperly used laser devices. Do not try this at home – leave it up to the Barrington veterinary professionals at The Animal Hospital of Barrington!

There’s no recovery time necessary with laser therapy. Once we turn off the device, your pet will likely already be feeling much better than before!
